THIRTEEN

“O’Malley, your ears must be burning,” Swift belted down the phone before Annie had a chance to speak. “I’ve been chasing this beast around the kitchen for the best part of three hours. He’s got my phone charger, Annie. Dragging it around by the cable, he won’t give it back. I’ve tried coaxing him out with Dreamies but he just growls at me and gives me this look. Raises one of his old man eyebrows at me. Looks at me like you do when I’m doing something stupid. Not that I’m saying you’ve got old man eyebrows. Yours are much shorter. In a good way. Not a shaved way. Er, anyway… is there a reason you’re calling me at one in the morning?”

Annie’s chest immediately expanded; it was so good to hear Swift’s voice.

“10-35,” she whispered, making as little noise as possible. With the windows open to the poolside, and the door banging open with the force of the cat on the other, Annie knew that her voice would carry across the air.

“Are you drunk dialling me, O’Malley?” Swift laughed and she could hear him opening the freezer and dropping ice into a glass.

The idea that Swift was safe in his kitchen, probably about to pour himself a whisky, or blend a smoothie was a double-edged sword to Annie. It was reassuring to hear him, knowing that he could help them, even if it was from a distance. But the vivid memory of his kitchen made Annie long to be there with him, chasing down the stray cat who’d stolen his phone charger, drinking whisky on a school night. Just generally doing things that didn’t involve probable death.

“Swift, listen very carefully,” she whispered, trying to make herself heard over the glug of liquid pouring on top of the cracking ice.

“Look, Annie, lovely,” he said, jovially. “I’m going to hang up the phone because drunk dialling is never a good idea, and I don’t want you to say something you’ll regret.”

Annie’s stomach lurched. If Swift hung up, he may not answer again. It was too late to ring the office, Tink and Page would be at home asleep, and calling the UK emergency services would be confusing and not what they needed right now. There was also a dragging feeling tugging at Annie’s heart, if Swift didn’t want her to talk when she was drunk, he definitely didn’t want to hear about the burgeoning feelings she had for him, because what else do people who drunk dial talk about? Not the weather. But Annie had stalled for long enough. Her feelings for Swift were not worth getting killed over.

“There’s gunmen in the hotel, Swift,” she hissed. “We need your help.”

The silence on the other end of the phone was like a vacuum. Annie pulled it away from her ear to check Swift was still there.

“Swift?” she whispered, seeing the timer still increasing.

“I’m here,” he said, popping the vacuum. “Talk to me.”

Annie explained what had happened as succinctly as possible. Their small
